September Recap: The Art of Journalism & Getting Media Coverage
The Girl Geeks are back after a brief but eventful summer “break” and we kicked off the new season with a media frenzy!
Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of welcoming sisters Aileen and Tarah Schwartz, who presented the art of story-telling in journalism, the value of local news, and how to build a story that has impact.
They recounted their every-day experiences and showed news clips highlighting that “all stories begin and end with people”. They showed us examples of how the media has the power to instigate change and spoke passionately about how strong journalism is about more than “just the facts” but finding a narrative that touches and impacts people.
Aileen and Tarah also provided useful tips on how to get the attention of media and what good PR looks like: don’t just send in a bunch of collateral, have focus and be succinct. (If they want more information, that’s what your website is for!) They also touched on the future and value of the local news in an age where more and more people turn to the web and audiences becomes fragmented.
Thank-you for an amazing and engaging presentation, Tarah and Aileen!
