October Recap: Public Speaking Workshop
Wow… it’s been a busy month! Between a Girl Geek road trip to WordCamp Toronto, a coach on the move and planning our November event, time has slipped by. Finally, here’s our recap of our Public Speaking Workshop:
What an awesome way to kick-off our new initiatives than with our first ever hands-on workshop! Honestly, the sold out Public Speaking Workshop was a complete success, and we have you, and of course our wonderful sponsor, TELUS Shared Hosting to thank. Suzannah Baum was a great coach: she laid out all the fundamentals, and gave us all the perfect amount of gentle encouragement and pant-kicking we could have asked for.
For 3 hours attendees were treated to not only watch a great speaker in Suzannah herself, but learn tangible best practices and tips to become great speakers ourselves. Suzannah covered content structure, effective delivery, the art of persuasion and storytelling, and of course we talked about those oh-so-common jitters.
We were engaged and focused the whole time and five volunteers took advantage of the exercises and got up to speak, on the spot, on topics as diverse as life in The Plateau, why everyone should learn programming, Julia Child as a dinner guest, and more! It was the perfect mix for beginners and intermediate level speakers to have every reason to say “yes!” to that next speaking request, myself included. In fact, Sandy, Liesl and I headed out to speak at WordCamp Toronto in early November, doing our part to change the ratio.
We were also really excited to give away some gg swag: every attendee of our workshop got one of our first ever Montreal Girl Geeks t-shirts! The tees are courtesy of TELUS Shared Hosting and feature a QR design by yours truly Please wear them to tech events (and on the town) to promote our community! For those who’ve asked, we have only a handful left to hand out to lucky event attendees, but we’ll be doing another run in the new year. And if you’re curious, that QR Code points to a special page on our site…
Big thanks to Suzannah for rocking it, our volunteer coordinator Jihane for being one smooth operator, and AriGateaux for the yummy vegan cookies! And what would an event at Notman House be without networking and free beer afterwards at Benelux? It would be an event without any networking and free beer, which is kind of a fail, so a big thanks to them too.
