July Recap: International Startup Festival

August 23rd, 2012

Montreal Girl Geeks @InternationalStartupFestival 2012

In the heat of mid-July the second International Startup Festival geared up in Montreal’s Old Port, where we were invited to host the ‘Women in Tech’ tent, featuring office hours and talks with prominent women.

Located at Quai Alexandra, the two-day conference focused on ‘Startups that Matter’. With female founders flocking from Toronto, Winnipeg, New York and beyond, they unanimously paid testament to the fact that women are changing the ratio in the startup community.

We were joined in our tent by YES Montreal, who are launching a brand-new , exciting initiative for Women in Technology (with support from Status of Women Canada). This new initiative kicks off with the official program launch on September 24, Tech Talk: a networking evening. A full program of support services and events will be offered to women seeking careers in tech or starting their own businesses.

Girl Geeks and YES co-hosted the ‘Women in Tech’ tent, welcoming stellar speakers to hold office hours throughout the event: Cindy Gallop, Tara Hunt, April Dunford, Liza Kindred, Sarah-Jane Morris, Fiona GilliganAngelique Mannella & Cheryl Tom. These inspiring women discussed a range of topics including ‘startup marketing’, ‘community management’ and ‘fashion tech’. Amongst several central discussions, the fiercely eloquent Cindy Gallop confronted the issue of ‘why self promotion is such a dirty word for women?’ prompting a very lively debate!

Entrepreneurs of both genders took advantage of the unique opportunity to engage with these talented women who so generously shared their expertise and experience within the close quarters of our 10’x10’ tent.

In true Girl Geek fashion, there was a constant flow of positive energy and dynamic dialogue, fueled by passionate women (and a little pizza), which made for an unforgettable experience.

A selection of tweets from the tent are below:

Big thanks to the organizers of Startup Festival, namely Philippe Telio, Alistair Croll & Rebecca Croll for a kick-ass event. Props to the women that spoke and the entrepreneurs that visited! We hope to see many of you in September for the first Montreal Girl Geeks event of our new season!
