April: Non-Traditional Working Environments Panel

April 16th, 2014

Do you or people on your teams telecommute, work remotely, from home or even from a beach in Costa Rica? Would you like to? Well then this is the event for you! Come hear from kick-ass Montrealer professionals who know their way around coworking and other non-traditional work environments.

Whether you’re a developer, creative, startup, freelancer, remote worker or just want to find out more about ditching a traditional office, we’ll guide you through some of the most important considerations to take. And if you’ve already shirked the cubicle, come hear useful tips from others who are working how they love to work!

About Our Panel

floh_herra-vegaFloh Herra-Vega, Full-Stack Developer

Floh Herra-Vega is a full-stack developer working mostly in Ruby. She makes Flewent, a language exchange community for Montreal and works on client and server-side parts of complex systems at Intello. She also helps organize Montreal Girl Hackers, is a board member at Head & Hands, and organizes RailsBridge Montreal. When she’s not coding, she likes books, board games, running and lifting heavy things.
How do you like to work?
I work from home at the moment, and I switch back and forth between my standing desk with two big monitors, and curled up on an armchair with my laptop. I snack constantly and drink lots of coffee, tea, and water. For part of the winter, I do the same thing but in Costa Rica instead of Montreal, where the armchair is generally placed outdoors.

Alice Phieu, Graphic Designer, BaconautsAlice Phieu

Alice Phieu is a graphic designer who specializes in art direction, branding and illustration, with a focus on the music & entertainment industries. For the past decade, she has worked at MapleMusic, Universal Music Canada, Latent Recordings and Outside Music. She has designed for bands such as the Cowboy Junkies, Skydiggers, K’naan, Tokyo Police Club and Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. Alice is the cofounder of Baconauts, a studio space for creative freelancers.
How do you like to work?
I like working at a walking distance away from home. I prefer to work in a cozy and quiet space equipped with a good coffee maker, reliable Wi-FI, noise-cancelling headphones… and a couch for napping.

Kathryn PresnerKathryn Presner, Happiness Engineer, Automattic

Kathryn Presner thrives on helping people get the most out of WordPress. After a career designing and building websites for clients through her own small company, she joined Automattic as a Happiness Engineer in 2012 and is currently embedded with the Theme Team, where she help folks with all types of theme-related issues. Non-WordPress hours are spent collecting vintage Pyrex mixing bowls, growing organic garlic, and cavorting with her four felines.
How do you like to work?
In my sunny, cozy, home office, with my quartet of kitties stretched out end-to-end on my desk, behind my monitors.

Caterina Rizzi, Co-founder and CCO, BreatherCaterina Rizzi

Spending the better part of her life absorbed in either the design or fashion world, Caterina has played a leading role in the successful creation and launch of international campaigns that engage people and create meaningful experiences for several retailers and brands.
As Breather‘s CCO, she is responsible for conceiving of the Breather “peace & quiet, on demand” concept and curating the full experience for Breather’s members, including designing the spaces, directing brand strategy, and much more.
How do you like to work?
On a couch (which is why there are couches in every Breather space) :D
