July: Female Founders Startup Showcase with Keynote by Monica Dodi

The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed we didn’t have an event in June… Now we can finally share why: we’ve been planning something huge. Like, really huge. As many of you know, Montreal Girl Geeks usually breaks for July & August, but this year we decided to pause June & August in favour of seeing our 2013/14 season off with a BANG!

What kind of a bang? Well, in partnership with our good friends MTL New Tech we’re putting on OUR BIGGEST EVENT TO DATE this Tuesday evening, July 8 at UQAM. What makes it so very special? For a start, we’re showcasing five amazing women who are founders and co-founders of kick-ass Montreal startups: Julie Hubert, Angelique Mannella, Caterina Rizzi, Cheryl Tom and Amanda Williams will present demos and answer your questions (see their bios below, how’s that for a dream lineup?)

On top of all that awesomeness, our generous partners the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal have provided a grant to secure a special interactive keynote from investor extraordinaire, Monica Dodi (whose CV doesn’t just speak for itself, it yells from the mountaintops! Check it out below…) All this emceed by sharing economy entrepreneur, Aleece Germano with food and drink to boot so you don’t have to network on an empty stomach as you get ready for International Startup Festival launching the next day. HOT DAMN, WE’RE SO EXCITED, CAN YOU TELL!?

The Program

7.30pm Keynote: Key investment criteria for entrepreneurs with Monica Dodi (Women’s VC Fund, Disney)
8.15pm Stay for networking. Featured speaker and startups will be there, as well as many other entrepreneurs

Speaker Bios

Keynote - Monica Dodi, Women's Venture Capital FundMonica Dodi, Women’s Venture Capital Fund

Monica is an international, multilingual new media entrepreneur who co-founded and is Managing Director of the Women’s Venture Capital Fund. In previous roles, she co-founded MTV Europe, joined Walt Disney/Europe as head of European Licensing, returned to the U.S. to help Warner Bros. roll out television channels worldwide, and was recruited by Brandon Tartikoff to be CEO in charge of launching AOL’s Entertainment Asylum which quickly became the fastest growing entertainment destination on the web.

Subsequently, at Softbank Technology Ventures, Monica focused on new media convergence and served as the Fund’s Entrepreneur in Residence. Monica is a member of The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a Board member of the Los Angeles River Revitalization Corporation, and Board Director of IvyCorp, Inc. She earned her BS in International Economics from Georgetown University and MBA from Harvard Business School.

Aleece Germano, TC MediaEmcee - Aleece Germano, TC Media

Aleece has been innovating in digital for 16 years, having launched her first e-commerce site in 1998 for The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. At Razorfish and then as a consultant, she was part of the team that launched and grew the Estée Lauder Companies’ online business from 1999 to 2009. As founder and Chair of the Board of The SWAP Team, she is a sharing economy pioneer. Aleece currently heads up social media at TC Media.

Julie is the president and co-founder of Workland, an innovative new web recruitment platform that helps talented professionals find and connect with pre-qualified employers looking to hire. After working for over a decade in large corporations, and having personally lived the painful job seeking process several times, she decided it was time to bring technology to the rescue of this growing problem. Vision, determination and the dedication of many talented and brilliant individuals have all contributed to bringing Workland to life in early 2014.


Angelique Mannella, Decode Global

Angelique is the founder & CEO of Decode Global, a mobile games startup that specializes in gaming for social good. She has 13 years of experience in technology product design and previously worked for Cisco Systems and Nokia. Angelique has lived in 6 countries worldwide, and has degrees from McGill University (BEng), the London School of Economics (MSc) & INSEAD (MBA).

Caterina Rizzi, Breather

Spending the better part of her life absorbed in either the design or fashion world, Caterina has played a leading role in the successful creation and launch of international campaigns that engage people and create meaningful experiences for several retailers and brands.

As Breather‘s CCO, she is responsible for conceiving of the Breather “peace & quiet, on demand” concept and curating the full experience for Breather’s members, including designing the spaces, directing brand strategy, and much more.


Cheryl Tom, Vain Pursuits

Cheryl is a seasoned entrepreneur with a rare combination of technical chops & business acumen. She has experience with 8+ bootstrapped companies, as well as 3 years building technology at CrowdTwist and 9 years building a beauty venture. Now she is leading the charge at Vain Pursuits. Vain Pursuits puts the care back into skincare with data-driven personalized formulas. Cheryl is a strong proponent of helping other women become business leaders. She comes from a family built on 4 generations of entrepreneurship and credits both that, and her training as a competitive gymnast, to her never-say-die-attitude.


Startup Demo - Amanda Williams, Fabule Fabrications

Amanda Williams, Fabule Fabrications

Amanda is Co-Founder of Fabule Fabrications and Wyld Collective. She’s in charge of creating beautiful interactions and hardware. She has a Ph.D. in Information and Computer Sciences from UC Irvine and a B.S. in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University. Amanda has worked at Xerox PARC, Adobe, Intel Research, and Microsoft Research. Indecisively, she loves both qualitative user research and hardware design.
